1 Victoria University of Wellington Scholarships for Pasifika students Angelo South Pacific Postgraduate Educational Scholarships This Scholarship was established in recognition of the long standing professional relationship between Professor Tony Angelo, of the Victoria University Law Faculty, and the countries of the South Pacific. In particular his close involvement with the development of academic legal studies at the University of the South Pacific and the long standing commitment of the Victoria University Law Faculty to the South Pacific. The Scholarship is tenable to a Law graduate from the Pacific Islands with a first class academic record, who plans to undertake, or is currently undertaking, a Master's degree at the Victoria University Law Faculty, either by thesis or by course work, or a Postgraduate Diploma. The applicant should be planning on a legal career in academic service, or in government or community service. Priority will be given to a student living in the Pacific Islands but Pacific students resident in New Zealand may also be considered. Regulations and application form Value: One return economy class airfare and fees (whether at international or domestic level) for the LLM or Postgraduate Diploma (for third or fourth year student intending to undertake one trimester at the University of the South Pacific, the value of the scholarship is one return economy airfare to Wellington) Closing date: 1 October Aniva Scholarship The Aniva Scholarship contribute to improving access to health services for Pacific peoples by assisting the development of the Pacific health and disability workforce. The scholarship provide financial assistance to students who are undertaking a course in health or disability related studies accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) or the New Zealand Vice Chancellors Committee. Applicants must be: * Full time student * Not receiving another scholarship which exceeds $1000 * Studying a NZQA health related course * NZ citizen of Pacific descent. 2 Awarua Trust Scholarship Scholarships are available to individuals who exhibit dedication towards the development of educational skills with a focus on the following: * The advance of education in all aspects of and research into sustainable and efficient farming and agricultural practices; and * To advance education and to relieve poverty by supporting the social and economic development, and education in New Zealand, of persons of Pacific Island and in particular Solomon Island descent. Applicants should be intending to study at a Masters or PhD level at Victoria University of Wellington in the areas of constitutional law, human rights, international law or issues affecting the South Pacific. Applicants must either be from one of the Pacific Island member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum (including those born in New Zealand of Pacific Island descent), or a non Pacific Islander intending to study an area of law with particular relevance to the Pacific, constitutional law or human rights. 3 Fulbright Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer s Residency The Fulbright Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency is for a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage to carry out work on a creative writing project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history at the University of Hawai'i for three months. Applicants must be: a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage whose work explores Pacific identity, culture or history; have already had at least two works published, accepted for publication, performed or screened; have a specific project on which you propose to work on during the residency. The project may be in any genre, but priority is given to works that focus on developing New Zealand literature in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, non fiction (including biography, history, arts related and cultural topics) and play writing; have a strong literary track record and previous involvement in literary festivals, events and panels; be able to present well to overseas contacts and representatives; not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants; For more information and application form contact or shauna@fulbright.org.nz Value: $30,000 Closing date: Check with Funder GFS (Girls Friendly Society) Pasifika Scholarship This scholarship is offered, via the Victoria University Foundation, to a New Zealand based Pasifika student (New Zealand citizen or permanent resident) who will be enrolling at Victoria University in the year following application. The scholarship is targeted at a student who is in their final year in one of the following schools: Aotea College Naenae College Taita College Wainuiomata High School He Huarahi Tamariki Titiro Whakamua Applicants will be intending to enrol for their first year of full time study for a degree course at Victoria, and are facing financial hardship. Successful applicants may not hold this award in conjunction with a scholarship of similar or greater value. 4 Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Research (Graduate) Students The Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbukagakusho) of the Government of Japan offers scholarship to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese university. Open to students from New Zealand to undertake research or a graduate degree in Japan. Applicants must be New Zealand or Samoan citizens and must be born on or after 2 April Applicants must have either an undergraduate degree, or the same or a higher level of academic ability as that of a university or college graduate. For more information and application form contact (04) or japan5@eoj.org.nz Value: 152,000 yen Research Student; 154,000 yen Master's program; 155,000 yen Doctoral programme Closing date: 21 May Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Specialized Training College Students The scholarship is available to secondary school graduates who are between 17 and 22 years old at the point of application. Applicants must be Samoan citizens. A three year scholarship is offered (first year in Japanese language training). Courses are undertaken in special training schools. Those who wish to study in Japan as an exchange student at a specialized training college should choose a field of study to major in the following: Technology; Personal Care and Nutrition; Education and Welfare; Business; Fashion and Home Economics; Cultural and General Education; or other fields. The funds are to be used to support research related expenses or fees. Applications will be considered from students in the Graduate School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, who are writing a Master's or PhD research thesis in public or community health. Preference will be given to full time students but part time students are also eligible. The selection will be made on academic merit and financial need. Some preference may be given to applicants of Māori or Polynesian descent. 5 New Zealand Pacific Scholarship New Zealand Pacific Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government's international aid and development programme. The New Zealand Pacific Scholarship recognises the very close personal, cultural and economic ties that New Zealand enjoys with Pacific countries. Applications are welcome from the following countries: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Applicants must: * be a citizen of one of the eligible countries and have resided in that country for at least two years at the time of application * not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country; or be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds or is eligible to hold New Zealand, Australian or another developed country citizenship or permanent residence status (applicants who are New Zealand citizens from the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and dual citizens of Samoa are exempt from this requirement) * be aged 17 years or over before the scholarship start date * not hold or have held a New Zealand Government or Australia Government scholarship in the preceding 24 months at the time of application * be commencing a new study or training programme, and not be seeking support for a training or degree programme already commenced in New Zealand or another country * not have completed, or nearly completed, a qualification or training programme at a similar academic level unless strong developmental relevance is demonstrated * be able to take up the scholarship in the academic year for which it is offered * satisfy the admission requirements of the education institution at which the study programme is to be undertaken (including that institution's English language proficiency criteria) * (for those applying directly from secondary school) have completed their senior schooling in their country of citizenship * (for in service applicants) have been working in their country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application * be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to their home country's public, private or civil society sector (as relevant), and to the development of their home country in general. Preference may be given to a mature student. The scholarship will be a contribution to course fees. 5
6 Applicants must be New Zealand based Pasifika students who meet the Trust's criteria outlined above, are enrolled for their first year of fulltime study for a degree course at Victoria, and are facing financial hardship. Regulations and application form Value: $6,000 ($2,000 per year per student up to three years) Closing date: 1 August PIPEF Postgraduate Scholarship This scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship annually to Post Graduate students studying to benefit the Polynesian peoples. Applicants must provide proof of NZ residency or citizenship, Pacific Island descent, and proof that they are enrolled in postgraduate studies and have paid their fees. For more information and application form contact or brian.sutcliffe@paradise.net.nz Value: $2000 Closing date: 31 March PIPEF/VUW Hardship Scholarship for Pacific Islands Students In partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, PIPEF funds scholarships for Pacific Islands Students facing financial hardship while at Victoria University. Any undergraduate Pacific Islands student, who is a permanent resident in New Zealand and who is enrolled full time at Victoria University is eligible to apply. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial hardship and satisfactory academic progress. The factors taken into consideration when assessing hardship will include: the level of shortfall in income; high course costs; high transport costs; creche fees; family to support; medical conditions or disabilities producing extra costs or preventing part time work; high financial liabilities. Consideration will be given to the applicants budgeting skills, their utilisation of other sources of funding, e.g. part time employment and the student loan scheme, and the viability of the proposed course of study. 7 Quentin Baxter Memorial Scholarship Fund The purpose of this fund is to provide monetary assistance to students undertaking or proposing to undertake study or research in the Faculty of Law at Victoria University. In even years (e.g. 2010) the scholarship will be open to all full time students of Maori descent who are currently enrolled in one or more second year law courses and who intend to complete an LLB at Victoria. The scholarship will normally be tenable, subject to satisfactory academic progress in the LLB, for up to three years. In odd years (e.g. 2011) the Scholarship is offered to Pasifika students. Regulations and application form Value: A maximum of $2,000 per annum Closing date: 30 July Reserve Bank of New Zealand Māori and Pacific Islands Scholarship The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage Māori and Pacific Islands' students to pursue studies in the field of economics, finance and banking studies. The Reserve Bank's objective is to increase the number of Māori and Pacific Islands' students with tertiary qualifications in economics, finance and banking studies to honours level, and thereby increase the numbers of these students employed in policy departments within the Bank. The scholarship is open to Māori and Pacific Islands' university students who have completed economics, finance or banking studies at the 100 level (Completed first year of university), who attained at least a B+ grade and who intend to continue studying to Honours level. For more information and application form contact (04) or recruitment@rbnz.govt.nz Value: $1,500 in first year, increasing to $2,500 in second year and to $3,500 in the final year Closing date: 21 January Ria McBride Public Service Management Award New Horizons for Women Trust The award is open to women employees of Public Service departments listed in the First Schedule of the State Sector Act 1988 who show potential to be promoted into higher*level management. The award is intended to fund education that will improve the applicant's management prospects. In addition, preference will be given to proposals that: * demonstrate a good match between the educational activity proposed and the applicant's career goals, and * honour the memory of Ria McBride. The award is restricted to residents of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori and Pacific women and women with disabilities are encouraged to apply. 7
8 For more information and application form contact or or visit Value: Up to $15,000 for study purposes Closing date: 30 April Sanitarium Pasifika Scholarship Sanitarium Vending Partnership Programme through the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Pasifika) to support Pasifika students at Victoria University of Wellington. Applicants must be New Zealand based Pasifika students who are either currently enrolled full time for a degree course at Victoria University of Wellington or intending to enrol full time for their first year of study for a degree course at Victoria, and are facing financial hardship. Successful applicants may not hold this award in conjunction with a scholarship of similar or greater value. The scholarships will normally be awarded for one year at Victoria University of Wellington. In special circumstances the Selection Committee will consider extending the scholarships for a further year. Regulations and application form Value: Scholarship value will vary depending on funds available Closing date: 1 October School of Psychology Maori and Pasifika Student Development Awards The School of Psychology at Victoria University of Wellington are offering awards for Māori and Pasifika students who are currently studying at the least the 300 level and are intending to enrol at the 400 level or Masters level (doing 400 level courses) next year (this award is NOT for PhD students or Masters by thesis only). The awards will be decided on academic merit and consideration of a statement of goals and aspirations submitted by the applicant. To be eligible you must: * be enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate degree at the School of Psychology * demonstrate descendent links to Māori or Pasifika * demonstrate commitment to Māori or Pasifika communities Regulations and application form Value: Partial fees waiver Closing date: 15 November 8
9 Shafi Family Scholarship The Shafi Family Scholarship was established to assist and encourage students from developing countries who are undertaking studies in Electrical Engineering. Its purpose is to recognise and reward talent and assist in meeting their education costs. The Scholarship is open to students from the following countries who are enrolling in their 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor of Engineering Degree: Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bangladesh Pacific Islands: Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga The Scholarship will be based on academic merit with a clear indication of financial need. If the recipient is in their 3rd year, they may be eligible to apply for the scholarship again in their 4th year. Regulations and application form Value: $5,000 to pay for fees (subject to funds available) Closing date: 15 November Study Award in Maori and Pasifika Education Research Each year the Ministry of Education offers one Study Award in Māori Education Research and one Study Award in Pasifika Education Research. These awards aim to assist emerging education researchers undertaking a Masters or PhD to make a quality contribution to the body of knowledge in Māori or Pasifika education research. Anyone who can demonstrate the following: * a good undergraduate degree * are enrolled in a full time post graduate course of study * their proposed study is relevant to Māori or Pasifika education policy and research * have an intention to make an ongoing contribution to Māori or Pasifika Education research * a commitment to Māori or Pasifika communities * are permanent residents or New Zealand citizens * are not previous recipients * are not Ministry of Education employees For more information and application form contact (04) or research.support@minedu.govt.nz or visit Value: $5,000 per annum Closing date: 27 March 9
10 Tufi Taufao Scholarship The Tufi Taufao Scholarships were introduced in 2011 to encourage greater numbers of Pasifika students to participate in overseas student exchange. The scholarships will be awarded to Pacific students who have been accepted for the Vic OE (Victoria Overseas Exchange) programme and show a capacity for leadership and responsibility in business or the wider community. Applicants must also be domestic students. Academic achievement and hardship will also be considered. Information about exchanges and current exchange partnerships is available from Regulations and application form Value: $2,500 Closing date: 1 May and 1 October Tumau Awards Tumau Awards are to enable Maori and Pacific students who are facing financial hardship, to continue their study at Victoria University. Open to all Maori and Pacific Students who are studying full time and have either NZ Citizenship or are a Permanent Resident of NZ. Part time students may be considered at the panel's discretion. The Awards will be awarded on the basis of financial hardship and satisfactory academic commitment and progress. Factors taken into consideration when assessing hardship could include the shortfall between income and essential expenses, high course costs, high transport costs, family to support, medical conditions or a disability preventing part time work and other extenuating circumstances. Regulations and application form Value: The Grants are variable and range from $900 up to $1,600 Closing date: 30 April Victoria Business School & AVC (Pasifika) YES Scholarship These Scholarships have been established by the Victoria Business School and the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Pasifika) in conjunction with the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) for two Year 13 Pasifika students (1 Male and 1 Female). The purpose of the Scholarships is to incentivise and encourage more Pasifika students into the full range of business, economics and public sector disciplines at Victoria University of Wellington. 10
11 Students must be recommended by a teacher as having demonstrated enterprising and business skills in the Young Enterprise Scheme programme in Year 13, obtain a high quality of achievement in NCEA, and complete a brief essay about their learnings from the YES scheme. The scholarships will be awarded to Pacific students who have submitted or be are in the process of submitting an application to study at the Victoria Business School. Regulations and application form Value: $500 Closing date: 1 November Victoria Research Support Grant This grant was established, via the Victoria University Foundation, to support students undertaking postgraduate research at Victoria University. Priority to be given to those students conducting postgraduate research in Law, although other research areas may be considered. Priority may also be given to postgraduate students from Pacific Island countries although other candidates may be considered, including Pacific Island students resident in New Zealand. Selection to be made based on academic excellence and financial hardship. Financial hardship may be assessed by Student Financial Advice, if appropriate. Regulations and application form: Value: Fees and/or living allowance, subject to funds available, or by way of addition to another award Closing date: 1 March, 1 July, 1 November W R Lauder Memorial Scholarship in Geology This scholarship is to support postgraduate students undertaking research in Geology, with a focus on igneous and metamorphic petrology. The funds are to be used to support research related expenses or fees. One scholarship will be offered biennially (in odd numbered years). Applications will be considered from full time students in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences who are undertaking postgraduate research in any aspect of igneous or metamorphic petrology at either Master's or PhD levels. The selection will be made on academic merit and financial need. Some preference may be given to applicants of Maori or Polynesian descent.
