Vision Well-designed network: match demands, correct capacity, correct speed, fast transit times

ENERPLAN Energy Efficient Transportation Planning Supported by Danish Council for Strategic Research (green IT) , 2 PhD + 2 Postdocs - Network Design - Stowage - Disruption management - Combined land and sea transportation More than 15 ISI papers published Similar amount conference papers Among 3-4 leading groups in maritime optimization Benchmark suite, domain description

ENERPLAN projects Disruption Management Stowage

Competitive Network Design Transportation times Number of transhipments Empty container repositioning 9 24 June 2013

Economy and environment go hand in hand Difficult to regulate CO2 emission from international trade Difficult to motivate end users Optimization: Run network more efficiently Move transportation from land to sea June 2013

Strategic Simulation innovative strategy development and risk management Mette Sanne Hansen, Postdoc NARRATIVE SIMULATION NUMERICAL SIMULATION S 1 INPUT A OUTPUT S 3 S 2 B X S 4 S 5 C D Y Z The interaction between narrative and numerical simulation as a practical tool for strategy development and risk management across the different layers of an organisation 11

Routing and scheduling of tramp ships PhD project by Charlotte Vilhelmsen Background Tramp ships operate like taxies following available cargoes Operators often have contract cargoes that must be carried and seek to maximise profit from optional cargoes The problem: Routing and scheduling Which cargoes to carry On which ship to carry which cargoes In which order to serve cargoes What time to pickup/discharge each cargo Large fleets make manual planning inefficient Overall goal Develop advanced mathematical models and use Operations Research techniques to efficiently route and schedule tramp ships Incorporate operational aspects, e.g. refueling, speed selection and stowage to achieve input on both tactical and operational levels

Innovation in networks in the maritime industry How collaboration for innovation creates business value for the maritime industry By Zoran Perunovic, Mads Christoffersen and Sofia Fürstenberg Objectives To determine the key enablers, barriers, and mechanisms of innovation in networks in the maritime industry To identify the key characteristics of collaborative innovation processes applied in the maritime industry To determine managerial actions to be undertaken to organize for successful innovation in networks

Background: Challenge to be addressed Why be concerned about product and service? Personal computers annual cost of use: $6,259 Locomotives annual operation costs: $29 bio. Ship annual operation costs:??? MARITME OBSERVATIONS: 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% network administration network technical support network equipment non-productive operations by enduser (downtime, file management etc.) administration technical support desktop hardware total expenditure: 5 x product costs product s e r v i c e yard operations, railway administration, etc. train operations infrastructure freight car services locomotive services locomotives total expenditure: 21 x product costs decomissioning unforseen breakdowns cargo-related systems aux. motor main motor fuel Ship total expenditure:?? x product costs Illustrative sketch only Many Danish maritime companies currently operating after-sales service, but at a cost/no profit Service still the key to more product sales, in a world where the opposite is dominating No systematic service development examples How to create a servicebased business model? How to organise the company for service? [after Wise & Baumgartner, HBR, 1999]

Research question How can PSS aid the maritime branch? A generic framework for PSS design Four basic elements need designing: Design for service: Design for Maintenance Design for Upgrade Design for (Remote) Monitoring Design for Reuse Design for Replacement Design for Longevity PSS design Based on a full customer activity understanding through own data, plus development of own competencies Existing infrastructure utilised, plus new infrastructure developed Expanded set of stakeholders must be involved
