1 Exit Interview Summary 01/07/ to 30/09/ Background In order to supplement the information gained from the annual staff survey the exit interview system was centralised with all responses logged to enable analysis. This system was launched in January 20. The first report covered the period from 1 st January 20 to the 30 th 20. Quantitative data from this report is shown for comparison alongside the data covering 1 st July to 30 th ember 20. The results make interesting reading and with regard to staff working extra hours, appraisal and communication the findings continue to broadly reflect the findings of the 2012 NHS Annual Staff Survey, confirming that these areas remain issues for the Trust. In the last report just under 50% of those staff interviewed said that they would recommend the Trust to family and friends as a place to work and 60% as a place to have treatment. In the period from 1 July to 30 ember 55% of the staff interviewed said that they would recommend the Trust to family and friends as a place to work and 81% as a place to receive treatment. The number of staff interviewed that have felt bullied or harassed or feel that they have not been treated with professional respect and courtesy by staff, patients and visitors continues to be a concern. Four of the 27 staff interviewed had been subjected to physical violence from patients, relatives or visitors and 2 had been subject to physical violence from staff. Of the 27 staff interviewed 4 had raised a concern with just 2 of them feeling that their concerns were listened to/suitably addressed. Just over a third had experienced problems at some point balancing their work and home life and approximately a fifth (less than the 50% in the previous report) had felt under pressure to work additional hours. Only two staff said that things changing would affect their decision to leave the Trust. ember Total Exit Interviews Carried Out Gender: Female Male 1. Examples of additional comments Q7: (7) Like them as people. They have been understanding re: work life balance but not good in managing work. Unrealistic workloads, too much work for time/hours. Problem flagged up, but no help. Some staff off with stress due to this. Pay fine, working conditions poor. Not team work due to stressful environment. (7). Upper management-inexperienced lack managerial expertise, rapport, poor communication (3). Poor level of staff to cover all areas of the phlebotomy work. It doesn t feel as though staffing levels & skill mix are taken into account. It is as though anything goes to cover the shift. This is a busy hard ward & the excess demands on staff are leading to a large numbers of staff leaving. Reliance on new starters & agency is unfair on them, experienced staff or patients. 8. Examples of additional comments Q11: Other staff in the office I worked in need to be given equality & diversity information regarding working with others. Tried (whole office) but never happened. Not told of additional clinics etc. total lack of communication Ward leader made unprofessional comments about a member of staff in front of other staff and repeats confidential information to other staff. Felt stressed and put under pressure. Views of staff regarding investment into the department for new equipment I feel were ignored for several years. Skill mix of staff in the department especially when people were on annual leave/staff shortages and training of the ones that were left. Further comments Q14: I have enjoyed working for the NHS for 46 years Loved the job and enjoyed working with patients but was always being taken away from them with other issues. Most of the time at the trust very positive, but less so for the last year or so. The process from interview to starting my new job took 2 months, very long and communication from HR was poor. I didn t feel supported at all while waiting fro my CRB check to arrive - very poor HR system. Pressure and paperwork, less focus on patient care. Skill mix & staffing levels have changed & impacted negatively. 15. Please tick to indicate whether your new employment is: July July 1.
