5 General Provisions StudO LSS Bangalore 1 General Provisions 1.1 Scope of the Regulations These program regulations govern the Law Summer School (LSS) Bangalore. The Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich (Faculty of Law) holds LSS Bangalore in collaboration with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. Graduates of LSS Bangalore will be awarded a "Certificate of Attendance." The results achieved will be reported on a special report card. 1.2 Legal bases The principles of the "Agreement of Cooperation between the University of Zurich Faculty of Law and the National Law School of India University" of 1 January 2008 form the basis for these program regulations. 1.3 Supplementary provisions The "Student Code of Conduct" is an integral part of these program regulations. Signing the "Student Code of Conduct" is a prerequisite for participation in LSS Bangalore. Issues not covered by these program regulations are governed by the provisions of the framework regulations for the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs and minor subject programs of 20 August 2012 (RVO), of the University of Zurich Faculty of Law, and the Master of Law program regulations of 30 May 2012 (StudO M Law). The Steering Committee of LSS Bangalore issues regulatory provisions. Further information is available on LSS Bangalore's website. The objection that someone does not know the content of these additional provisions is excluded. 1.4 Purpose The LSS Bangalore offers students an opportunity to deepen their legal knowledge in selected fields and at the same time to acquire a reflective understanding of the University of Zurich Faculty of Law Page 5

6 StudO LSS Bangalore Coordination and organization Indian legal system within the framework of an intensive intellectual and cultural experience. 1.5 Admission The number of places in LSS Bangalore is limited. The LSS Bangalore's Steering Committee selects the participants. The LSS Bangalore is open to 18 to 35 students of law or a related field. Participants have a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent transcript of records. Students who plan to complete their Bachelor's degree program in the spring or autumn semester of the implementation year are also allowed to apply. The Steering Committee decides on a case-by-case basis whether to admit other people who show interest in participating in LSS Bangalore. With adequate qualifications, a third of the places are reserved for students of the Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich. If the qualifications of students from the Faculty of Law and those of other students are equal, half of the places will go to students from the Faculty of Law. Matriculation in the University of Zurich is not required for participation in LSS Bangalore. 2 Coordination and organization 2.1 Faculty of Law The Faculty of Law exercises governance over LSS Bangalore, takes the relevant study program into account, as well as the teaching staff engaged. It approves the exams given and issues the "Certificate of Attendance." It elects LSS Bangalore Steering Committee members for terms of two years, and reelection is permitted. At the request of the Steering Committee, it decides on changes to the program regulations. Page 6 University of Zurich Faculty of Law

7 Coordination and organization StudO LSS Bangalore 2.2 Faculty Council The Faculty Council oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of LSS Bangalore. It approves the budget, the annual financial statement and the coordination office. It decides on all Steering Committee requests not handled by the faculty. 2.3 Steering Committee The LSS Bangalore Steering Committee consists of at least two professors from the Faculty of Law. The Steering Committee has the following main tasks: 1. Organizing and implementing LSS Bangalore; 2. Submitting recommendations to the Faculty of Law for selection of Steering Committee members; 3. Recruiting and managing coordination office employees; 4. Regularly informing the faculty on activities performed; 5. Communicating and collaborating with the NLSIU; 6. Drawing up the budget and annual financial statement for the Faculty Council; 7. Acquiring third-party funds; 8. Managing quality assurance, particularly by establishing admission principles, selection criteria, and assessments to be performed, and by evaluating the study program; 9. Issuing fact sheets; 10. Issuing teaching appointments; 11. Selecting the director of studies on-site; 12. Deciding on LSS Bangalore admissions; 13. Deciding on written requests by study program participants; 14. Determining the exam dates; 15. Deciding on applications for re-evaluation of assessments. University of Zurich Faculty of Law Page 7

8 StudO LSS Bangalore LSS Bangalore The Steering Committee is responsible for all other matters that are not transferred to another authority. 2.4 Teaching staff The teaching staff consists of members of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Law and the NLSIU, as well as selected staff from other universities and experts in the field. A teaching appointment is issued for the teaching assignment. Teaching by members of the teaching staff from the University of Zurich Faculty of Law falls outside the teaching load. The members of the teaching staff are appointed on an annual basis. 2.5 Coordination office The coordination office is set up and managed by the Steering Committee. It is responsible for planning and implementing the LSS. It serves all participants and coordinates operation of the LSS on site. 3 LSS Bangalore 3.1 Duration of program The LSS Bangalore usually lasts three to four weeks. 3.2 Modules The instructional material consists of various modules. The content of the modules is described in the professorial job posting. 3.3 Offerings Three to five modules are offered, from which participants can always select two. Selection of a third module is possible on request to the Steering Committee. The modules offered are newly determined each year and published on the LSS Bangalore website. 9 Assessment StudO LSS Bangalore The program includes additional events, such as presentations by guest speakers and discussion groups, which may also be subject to compulsory attendance per paragraph 3.6. Participation in extracurricular activities, such as field trips, is optional. 3.4 Language The courses and assessments are in English. 3.5 Application The application procedure usually takes place at the Faculty of Law during the spring semester of the respective implementation year. Modules must be selected before LSS Bangalore begins. Students from the Faculty of Law will find out upon application whether the selected modules will be accepted for credit toward their Master's degree program. The credit cannot be waived later. 3.6 Compulsory attendance Attendance is compulsory at 80 percent of the respective course. If the required attendance is not met, no assessment can be issued for the relevant module, and a failing grade is issued for that module. A grade of 1 is issued. Moreover, no "Certificate of Attendance" is issued. If the required attendance is not met for compelling, unforeseeable, and unavoidable reasons, a written request for a cancellation of the compulsory attendance must immediately be submitted to the Steering Committee. If the request is approved, the assessment can be issued. 4 Assessment 4.1 Assessment An assessment is generally based on a written examination. Assessments may also be based on oral examinations, presentations, group work, colloquia, or other written work. Field trips can be evaluated by issuance of a protocol. 10 StudO LSS Bangalore Assessment 4.2 Credit Students at the University of Zurich Faculty of Law can receive Master's degree program credit for individual modules. The specific provisions can be found on the LSS Bangalore website. For external students, it is up to their respective home faculty whether to issue credit for the assessments. 4.3 Issuing grades and ECTS credits The assessments are evaluated with grades of 1 to 6. Half grades are permitted. Grades below 4 indicate failure. ECTS credits are issued if the module is regarded as passed, subject to paragraph 3.6. ECTS credits for a module are issued either fully or not at all. 4.4 Repetition of assessments An assessment evaluated as passing cannot be repeated. An assessment evaluated as failing can be repeated once. For students of the University of Zurich, the repeat examination takes place on the premises of the University of Zurich. The examination date is arranged independently with the appropriate examiners. External students must arrange the time and place of the repeat examination independently with the appropriate examiners. 4.5 Dishonest behavior in making assessments When an assessment is being made, if prohibited materials are brought or used, or any other dishonesty is engaged in, the relevant assessment will be considered failed and receive a grade of 1. Moreover, no "Certificate of Attendance" is issued. 4.6 Violation of the "Student Code of Conduct" Students may be expelled from the study program if they violate the "Student Code of Conduct." 11 Assessment StudO LSS Bangalore 4.7 Cancellation of assessments Before or during the implementation of an assessment, if a compelling, unforeseeable, and unavoidable impediment arises, a written cancellation request must immediately be submitted to the Steering Committee no later than the day of the assessment. This request must be justified and accompanied by appropriate substantiation (such as a doctor's note). However, local difficulties in obtaining substantiation will be taken into account. If a candidate does not yield an assessment but is not excused, this assessment will be regarded as failed. After the assessment has been made, it is not possible to appeal based on known or identifiable problems that had or may have adversely affected the assessment. 4.8 Communication of study results and appeal At the end of LSS Bangalore, the students will receive a report on the ECTS credits attained and the grades earned. Correction of obvious errors or mistakes can immediately be requested through an informal reporting process. Further details on the reporting process are governed by a fact sheet. Otherwise, the report of study results is subject to appeal to the Faculty Council of the University of Zurich Faculty of Law. The appeal must be submitted in writing to the Faculty Council within 30 days after receipt of the report. It must contain a request and substantiation. If required, the Faculty Council will decide to solicit a statement from the examiner. The student assessment will be reviewed for legal violations and breach of process regulations. Appeals relating to inappropriateness shall be excluded. Decisions by the Faculty Council are subject to appeal to the Appeals Committee of the Cantonal Institutes of Higher Learning in Zurich according to Section 46 of the University Act and Section 19 et seq. of the Administration of Justice Act. 4.9 Completion of LSS Bangalore After successfully completing LSS Bangalore, graduates receive a "Certificate of Attendance" from the Faculty of Law and the report card described in paragraph 4.8. 12 StudO LSS Bangalore Finances 5 Finances 5.1 Annual tuition The tuition is determined each year by the Steering Committee. Payments must be made before the start of LSS Bangalore.
