Training environment A training contract at Pinsent Masons represents the first stage of a focused development programme that will enable you to reach your full potential. Our training programme has been developed in-house, which ensures you receive a balanced and comprehensive introduction to the profession. Trainees move departments every six months. This gives you the necessary time to develop the legal and commercial depth of understanding required to take on real client-facing responsibility. During the second year of training you may also have the opportunity to undertake a secondment to either a client organisation or one of our international offices.

Vacation placements We believe that a vacation placement is the best way for you to understand whether a career in commercial law at Pinsent Masons is right for you. We typically recruit 70% of our trainee solicitors through our vacation placement programme and strongly recommend this application route to candidates. The application process All training contracts are awarded on merit and in order to be considered you need make an application through our online application form which you can find on our website. We receive applications from more than 2,000 prospective trainees, so make sure that you take time over your application form. It is only the first stage of our process but unless you get it absolutely right, you won't make it onto stage 2. We read every application we receive, selecting the very best to undertake our online psychometric test, with those who pass going through to final stage of Assessment Centre. At our Assessment Centre you will be interviewed by two of our Partners and another PM lawyer, as well as meeting our Graduate Recruitment team and some of our current trainees. Life after your training contract Given how much we invest, we naturally try to retain as many trainees as possible. Our recent retention rate has been in excess of 70% and many Pinsent Masons trained solicitors have gone on to become partners in the firm. The wider pressures of the global economy have made it harder for commercial law firms to retain their trainees and we have had to respond to this. By carefully controlling the number of trainees in the business and increasing our use of paralegals and legal support staff, we aim to not only retain a greater percentage of our trainees but also ensure that they are given the highest quality of work which will stretch them further and allow them to learn and develop quickly. 7 Vacation Schemes Linklaters offers vacation schemes for penultimate year students at UK universities (law and non-law), which take place over the summer. We also offer first year law undergraduates (or those in second year of a four-year law degree) structured work experience through a two-day insight programme called Pathfinder. All applications begin with an online application form. Training Contract Linklaters recruits a diverse mix of the most talented graduates from a wide range of universities and backgrounds. The traineeship is challenging and you will work hard but you will have the opportunity to work with exciting clients on interesting deals and with some of the best lawyers in the UK. During your traineeship you will have the opportunity of a structured review meeting every three months so that you are clear about what we expect of you as well as providing you with a forum to discuss your achievements, and any areas for development. To help you settle in during your first few weeks you will be given a thorough induction into the workings of Dundas & Wilson. 15 TRAINEESHIPS & SUMMER PLACEMENTS Like many other firms, Simpson & Marwick trainees are placed in four different seats throughout their two year traineeship. Uniquely however, all four seats will be in the field of litigation allowing trainees to gain a breadth and variety of experience in litigation and employment law litigation practice. Litigation is fast paced and challenging and as a trainee at Simpson & Marwick you will be expected to be an integral part of the team from the very beginning. As well as assisting partners and more senior members of staff with work on their files, such as research and drafting, our trainees are given their own case load at an early stage. This provides a degree of autonomy as well as a steep learning curve. Trainees are required to deal with all aspects of file handling from providing advice to clients, to drafting pleadings, dealing with other solicitors, and appearing in court for procedural hearings and proof diets. Advocacy is an important part of litigation practice and our trainees are expected to appear in small claim and summary cause proceedings in the sheriff court from the very start of their traineeships. In second year trainees will gain a restricted practicing certificate and will also be expected to appear in ordinary cause proceedings. Trainees are given the opportunity to participate in our in-house advocacy training course, which was developed by former senior partner Lord Jones, and which is now led by members of the Simpson & Marwick advocacy unit. Our traineeship provides a solid basis for anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in litigation. There is an ethos of working hard from the outset, but there is also a strong support network in place to help trainees throughout their two years. There is also the opportunity to make great friends, socialise with colleagues, and have fun whilst gaining fundamental experience at the very start of your career.
