What Is VERILAST Hip Technology? OXINIUM Oxidized Zirconium and XLPE Zirconium is a biocompatible metal similar to titanium As a metal alloy, OXINIUM undergoes a heating process that transforms the surface into a hard, smooth ceramic yet it retains all of the strength of the underlying metal. XLPE a densely-weaved, low-friction cross-linked polyethylene that is specially designed to reduce surface wear VERILAST is the only hip implant with two wear-reducing surfaces OXINIUM on XLPE Trademark of Smith & Nephew.Certain marks Reg. US Pat. & TM Off.
The Benefits of OXINIUM OXINIUM* Oxidized Zirconium May extend the life of the implant and reduce the need for future surgeries Weighs 20% lighter than same-sized implant made from cobalt chrome Safe for patients with metal allergy (virtually no nickel) Appropriate for young, physically active patients Trademark of Smith & Nephew. Certain marks Reg. US Pat. & TM Off.
The Importance of Implant Longevity VERILAST s advanced, low-friction surfaces Wear caused when two surfaces rub against each other is the most common reason for implant failure and revision surgery VERILAST significantly reduces wear with two proprietary low-friction materials The VERILAST surface is proven to be 4,900 times more resistant to the commonly experienced metal abrasion that wears through plastic components The oxidized VERILAST surface reduces plastic component wear by up to 98% Less wear also means less metal debris and metal ions Trademark of Smith & Nephew.Certain marks Reg. US Pat. & TM Off.
VERILAST Technology: OXINIUM on XLPE Traditional Hip Implants vs. VERILAST Technology
Cobalt Chrome on Plastic Implants Most common type of implant Typically combines cobalt chrome with high-density yplastic Expected to last years before wear becomes an issue Heads are most often used because they are very strong, but the surface can roughen over time and thus wear out the plastic liner Concerns over metal ions and wear debris Adverse reactions in metal-sensitive patients t Cobalt chrome on plastic
Ceramic-on-Ceramic Implants Reduced wear, but increased fracture risk Introduced to reduce metal debris and wear Heads are far more abrasion-resistant, it t which can extend the life of the plastic liner Found to fracture under fracture under certain conditions Squeaking and chipping are other issues with ceramic-on-ceramic Ceramic-on-ceramic
VERILAST Technology Hip Implant Wear-reducing VERILAST Technology Combination of Smith & Nephew s patented metal alloy OXINIUM and XLPE highly cross-linked polyethylene The only hip implant technology that combines two low-friction materials The only combination of implant materials that eliminates the concerns associated with cobalt chrome and ceramic-onceramic OXINIUM on XLPE
Why choose VERILAST Hip Technology Reduces risk of osteolysis which dissolves healthy bone around a prosthesis and can eventually loosen the bond between an implant and bone possibly causing pain, deformity or instability Reduces potential ti need for revision i hip replacement surgery which h carries risks such as DVT, infection, heterotopic bone formation, bone fractures, dislocation, difference in leg lengths, loss of bone tissue Contains no nickel or chromium which can cause problems for patients with metal sensitivities Weighs 20% less than traditional implant material without compromising durability Uses same implants and instrumentation so no learning curve involved for surgeon
Long Term Wear Study for Long-Term Wear Study for VERILAST Technology
Long-Term VERILAST Wear Study Smith & Nephew s put the LEGION* knee implant with VERILAST Technology through extensive lab testing and it surpassed traditional expectations: After 5 million steps, wear was reduced by 98% compared to other traditional implants After 45 million steps, wear reduced by 81% when compared to traditional implants at 5 million steps 45 million steps = 30 years of typical use under normal cond While the wear study was conducted on the knee implant, the same VERILAST technology is used in the hip implant
Disclaimer Based on simulated wear testing, LEGION CR Knee with VERILAST Technology is expected to provide wear performance sufficient for 30 years of actual use under typical conditions. Data on file at Smith & Nephew. The results of in-vitro wear simulation testing have not been proven to quantitatively predict clinical wear performance. Also a reduction in total polyethylene wear volume or wear rate alone may not result in an improved clinical outcome as wear particle size and morphology are also critical factors in the evaluation of the potential for wear mediated osteolysis and associated aseptic implant loosening. Particle size and morphology were not evaluated as part of the testing. Other risks can include loosening, fracture, dislocation and infection. Hip replacement surgery is intended to relieve hip pain and improve hip function. There are potential risks with hip replacement surgery such as loosening, fracture, dislocation, wear and infection that may result in the need for additional surgery. Do not perform high impact activities unless your surgeon tells you the bone has healed and gives you clearance. Early device failure, breakage or loosening may occur if you do not follow your surgeon s limitations on activity level. Early failure can happen if you do not guard your hip joint from overloading due to activity level, failure to control body weight or accidents such as falls. Talk to your doctor to determine what treatment may be best for you. Additional information provided at and com
