3 A technological headstart offers potential for innovation OMNIS Implants price advantage due to ceramic powder injection moulding technique The few ceramic implants available on the market are all ground to shape in an elaborate process from one complete ceramic body. This makes ceramic implants expensive and not within all patients reach. With the aid of CIM technology (Ceramic Injection Moulding) ceramic implants can be produced in series at economical prices. This opens up the market for ceramic implants to a larger clientele. Ceramic Injection Moulding In this modern process the shaping is carried out by injecting the parts on specially equipped injection moulding machines. With CIM technology, complex shapes can be achieved in one single process step. The smallest dimensions and delicate structures are possible and offer unbeatable advantages. The starting product is a granulate. Fine ceramic powder is initially mixed with a thermoplastic binding system and converted into an injection mouldable granulate. This compound allows itself to be processed with the same ease as plastic injection moulding materials. The injection moulding machine is filled with granulate. The granulate is heated in the injection moulding machine and at great pressure is forced into the tool. 3

4 Manufacture of green compacts The finished, moulded green compact is removed from the tool. The green compact is roughly 22% larger than the finished implant. The green compacts which have been produced in series are fed to the debinding process. The debinding process 4

8 OMNIS ceramic implants One-piece implants for transgingival healing excel because of their high mechanical strength. As there is no microgap, the risk of periimplantitis is reduced to a minimum. The round thread, which commences considerably below the peripheral edge of the bone, ensures high primary stability. An indication of transgingival healing is always present if a second intervention is to be avoided. The pre-requisite is that the inserted implants can be protected during healing. 9 Zirconium caps The zirconium caps are likewise manufactured by powder injection moulding and are the basis for veneer ceramics. Ceramic drill bits complete the metal-free product range. This covers 7 different diameters. In contrast to other ceramic drills, the ceramic drill bit relies on triple cutting edge geometry. This allows the implantologist to guide the drill securely and steadily. The cutting edges made of ZrO 2 ceramic are exceedingly sharp and suffer practically no wear. Even after 100 uses the cutting edges do not become blunt whilst conventional steel drills already start to lose their sharpness after 20 operations. 10 Scientific examination The long-term healing of ceramic implants, with the specially developed OMNIS surface, has been documented in several clinical case studies. We have extensive documentation which can be made available. The period of observation at present (as of 2009) goes back over a year. Histological examination of human preparations has been carried out at Freiburg University by Prof. R. Kohal. After approximately 3 months lasting osseointegration has taken place. 10
