Aim To examine the inter-relationship between human psychology, values and preferences, the behaviours associated with them, and the resulting impacts on the natural environment. Objectives This course should enable you to apply psychological theories broadly defined to include attitudes, values and ethics to the relationships between humans and the natural environment. By integrating these theories with environmental politics and policy, you should develop an understanding of how human psychology, preferences and values, as well as resulting behaviour, aids or hinders solutions to environmental pollution and natural resource problems. You should develop an awareness of how your own thoughts and actions impact the environment, and you may also acquire greater environmental concern. Assessments 1. 3 Assessments in detail 1. Participations at Lectures and Tutorials Weekly tutorials will reinforce learning from your reading, research and our classroom discussions. Topics for your tutorial presentation should follow the topics for weekly study and discussion (see weekly course outline below). Specific guidance will be provided during the introductory tutorial. When preparing and researching your tutorial presentation, for documentary sources you should go well beyond the required reading for each week. Students not giving presentations will be expected to ask questions and comment on the presentations. Tutorials will also be opportunities for you to ask questions and share your observations about weekly reading and course topics. An excellent ("A") performance in classroom and tutorial participation would look like this: You have attended at least 90% of the meetings; you have consistently contributed your ideas during discussions; your comments are thoughtful and make beneficial contributions to the group discussions; you have demonstrated through your comments that you have done the reading and thought carefully about it; and you make connections with concepts, ideas and issues from previous weeks. The assumption is that by trying to do these things you will learn as much as possible (which should be your primary objective and is my goal). 2. Tutorial Presentation In groups, you are required to present a research article related to the lecture topic of the week. The aim of the presentation is to inform the audience what the article is about. In the course schedule below, the references appear in the third column are articles you can use for your presentation. However, the references are mere guideline on what articles you can choose. You are engaged to find an article that you are comfortable with. The number of presenters must be no more than four students. You are encouraged to present using either overhead slides or MS Powerpoint. 3. Term Paper Due on 6 th December 5pm b c. The research essay is an opportunity for you to undertake a detailed examination of a specific topic related to this course. You should choose an essay topic and have it approved by one of the lecturers. Being able to formulate a research topic and question or hypothesis is a crucial part of scholarship (and as such I will not assign topics). Essay topics may follow the weekly topics and those covered by the reading, although you are strongly encouraged to choose an b Late essays will be marked down one letter-grade after the start of class and one letter grade for each day late. c Submit hardcopy of the essay to the general office on 3 rd floor of the Social Sciences Building 3

4 alternative topic in consultation with one or both of the lecturers. When preparing and researching your essay, for documentary sources you should go well beyond the required reading for each week. You are encouraged to write your paper in collaboration with one or more other students (but not more than three others). The grades for the paper will be allocated equally to all members in the group. Be sure to follow the Essay Guidelines below. Final Examination Exam will take place on 29 th November (week 13) during lecture schedule. It is an open book exam. Duration is 2 hours. 4
