Driver Assistive Truck Platooning (DATP): Evaluation, Testing, and Stakeholder Engagement for Near Term Deployment GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Auburn University

Project Overview FHWA Exploratory Advanced Research Program Topic 1D: Partial Automation for Truck Platooning Funding: $1M plus cost share Participants: Auburn University Peloton Peterbilt Trucks Meritor WABCO American Transportation Research Institute (ATA, TMC) Focus: Go to Market Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 2

AERODYNAMIC DRAG: ~65% OF FUEL USE AT 65MPH Improve Safety 12% Hwy Fuel Savings Increased Fleet Profits 3

Research Hypothesis DATP technology is ready for industrial use. DATP will provide value in specific roadway and operating conditions for heavy truck fleet operations. Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 4

DATP Implementation Two-truck pairs Longitudinal control only V2V communications exchanging performance parameters between vehicles Positioning sufficient to discriminate in-lane communications from out-of-lane communications Human-machine interfaces distinct modes for leading or following Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 5

Technology Package Platooning Indicator Antennas Display, Camera Tractor-only Installation Robust vehicle control software Radar Unit Acceleration Control Active Braking System System Control Module 6

Truck Industry: Wide Range of Questions How can my driver find another equipped vehicle? How do I know the other vehicle is trustworthy? How robust is the system? How will the following driver retain situational awareness? How does the job of the lead driver change? How does the system react to passenger car cut-ins and other anomalies? What is my return on investment (ROI)? Can the system adapt to changes in load? Project Aim: What does it take for the trucking industry to adopt DATP? Within what settings and under what circumstances? POLL Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 7

Schedule Phase One ( ) Concept of Operations Examine Business Case Technology Performance Evaluation Develop System Requirements Conduct Traffic Simulations Phase Two ( ) Implement Prototype System Evaluate on Test Track and Public Highway professional truck drivers Assess Technical Performance Assess Benefits (fuel economy, traffic flow) Assess User Acceptance drivers fleets Phase Three ( ) dissemination of results Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 8

Recent Activities Development of Concept of Operations under FHWA review Presentation at ATA Technology and Maintenance Council DSRC Task Force (Automated and Connected Truck Technologies Task Force) Initial Survey of Trucking Industry Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 9

Scenario s for DATP Linking Pre-paired: Trucks leave terminal together common for Less-than-Truckload Parcel carriers Private fleets (50% of all trucking companies) actual linking happens once on highway Ad Hoc: trucks find each other on the road possibly through 3 rd party clearinghouse Kiosk: truckers connect at truck stops private truck stops a good candidate truckers frequently there for hours getting rest register upon arrival, check for pairing at departure Linking within fleet or with other fleets? GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Samuel Ginn College of Engineering POLL 10

Trucking Industry Convenience Survey ATRI: initial survey to explore motor carriers and professional drivers perceptions and possible use of DATP technology for commercial trucks. Survey addressed general usage of precursor technology initial reactions to use of DATP perceptions of user benefit driver willingness to use the system Perceptions / opinions gained on: safety fleet efficiency litigation cost / payback period operational issues Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 11

Trucking Industry Convenience Survey: Some Results Portions of both groups (carriers and drivers) are very comfortable with technology and currently use some DATP-related technologies 54% of carriers and 40% of drivers are unsure of how a fully functional DATP might affect safety performance entirely new concept must define system requirements for safety objectively and subjectively 04/25/13GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 12

Trucking Industry Convenience Survey: Some Results Payback period: 87% of carrier respondents require a less than 24-month minimum payback/break-even period. Operational efficiency benefits: 30% of drivers expect to see a benefit Driver unwillingness to use DATP? A concern of 44% of carriers. Using DATP in tandem with a competitor? comfortable: 49% uncomfortable: 28% Low tolerance for either delaying or rerouting trucks for DATP linking 36% would not accept any delay 39% would only accept a delay of 1-10 minutes 39% would not reroute a truck to link with another truck 6% would consider rerouting. 04/25/13GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Samuel Ginn College of Engineering POLL 13

Survey: Factors To Increase Carrier s Comfort with DATP Concept Resolving safety/litigation issues (72%) DATP demonstrating clear benefits (54%) Reasonable cost of DATP systems (49%) 04/25/13GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Samuel Ginn College of Engineering POLL 14

Survey: Desired Outcomes Increased safety performance (69% carrier, 54% driver) Increased driver efficiency (49% carrier, 34% driver) Improved fuel efficiency (67% carrier, 54% driver) 0-5% fuel efficiency increase: 52% of carriers 6-10% increase: 31% of carriers More than 10% increase: 17% of carriers 04/25/13GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Lab Samuel Ginn College of Engineering 15
