1 Apply Now to Become a 2016 EducationUSA Academy Host Campus Interested in inspiring high school students from around the world to pursue undergraduate studies in the U.S.? Ready to enhance your campus s international profile? Apply to become a 2016 EducationUSA Academy host campus and join a prestigious network of institutions that share these goals. The U.S. Department of State s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and World Learning invite you to apply to host an EducationUSA Academy in summer The EducationUSA Academy is a short-term summer program that provides three-to-four weeks of English language courses, college preparatory content, tours of diverse colleges and universities, and cross-cultural activities to self-funded 15- to 17-year-old students from around the world. The long-term goal of the EducationUSA Academy is to create a new recruitment pipeline to U.S. higher education for international high school students who may not have considered undergraduate study in the United States, by providing them with information and skills to be successful at a U.S. higher education institution. Selected institutions will become part of the EducationUSA Academy network of leading U.S. institutions and can utilize the EducationUSA brand and network of international student advising centers for global recruiting efforts. The EducationUSA Academy initiative aims to increase and diversify the pool of international students studying on U.S. campuses, in the short-run as summer program participants and in the long-run as matriculated students. Hosting an EducationUSA Academy will enable participating institutions to develop programming for international youth, build their name recognition around the world, and maximize campus capacity during summer months. In return, hosts must meet the required program criteria for hosting an EducationUSA Academy (requirements are listed on the following pages), set high-quality standards for hosting international youth, provide excellent, experiential content, and offer a competitively priced program. Each year, up to 10 to 15 additional creative and capable institutions will be selected to join the prestigious EducationUSA Academy network. Institutions applying to host a summer 2016 Academy will be selected for up to a three-year period without needing to reapply, with the understanding that they will need to meet all required program elements (including health and safety standards regarding hosting minors) and offer a quality program to be evaluated by World Learning. World Learning is partnering with EducationUSA to implement this program in its initial years and by 2018 will establish a self-governing board of representatives from participating U.S. institutions to oversee adherence to program rules and maintain quality as the EducationUSA Academy network grows to include more host universities and international student participants. If your institution is interested in becoming one of the first EducationUSA Academy host campuses, please see the program requirements and application information on the following pages. Applications are due to World Learning on October 20, For more information, contact us at: edusaacademy@worldlearning.org.
2 REQUIRED PROGRAM ELEMENTS: 1) Capacity to host one or two cohorts of approximately 20 youth between the ages of for an engaging oncampus summer program. Develop a comprehensive plan for working with youth that articulates an understanding of and adherence to all health, safety, emergency, and disciplinary standards for minors and is consistent with applicable laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. Present a variety of program strategies and formats that effectively engage youth from diverse cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, including students with disabilities. 2) Demonstrated expertise in the delivery of high-quality intensive English language programs. Offer hours per week of interactive English language instruction for intermediate and advanced students of English. The preference is for each host campus to host one cohort at each level (pending application/acceptance numbers and levels of students admitted to the program). Include course content that is a balance of academic reading, writing and oral (speaking and listening) communication, delivered in a variety of formats, with an emphasis on college preparatory content. Note, while preparing students to take the TOEFL should be a component of the curriculum, this should not be the main focus of the English language courses. Employ experienced, credentialed TESOL instructors, who ideally have experience teaching high school students. 3) Expertise in delivering college preparatory content. Expose students to the structure and diversity of the U.S. higher education sector, and prepare them to apply to U.S. colleges and universities. Content should be delivered in the context of the English instruction, as well as through supplemental programming (i.e., workshops). Develop a curriculum to prepare students for success in the U.S. classroom. Academy students should receive an overview of secondary and higher education systems in the United States and the U.S. college/university admissions process. Topics to be covered should include, but are not limited to: high school and college grading systems, college credits, academic culture and vocabulary (i.e. majors, minors, core curriculum, seminars, lectures, etc.), academic integrity, classroom participation, types of U.S. higher education institutions, the common application, essay writing, and standardized testing. Additionally, students should have the opportunity to develop basic skills in critical thinking, working in teams, and leadership.
3 4) Visits to diverse range of college and university campuses. Visit at least three other institutions of higher education during the program. Please include a list of institutions to be visited in your proposal. Include both two- and four-year institutions, as well as public and private institutions and, as possible, minority-serving institutions. Tours should be specifically geared toward international students. Academy faculty or staff should prepare students before each college tour and also debrief with them after each campus visit so that these tours become an integrated part of the overall Academy curriculum. 5) Integrated cultural programming. Provide a program format infused with supervised activities (a minimum of three to five per week) that expose students to the diversity of U.S. culture, U.S. traditions of civic engagement, and if possible, service learning activities. These activities could range from a volleyball game or picnic with American students on campus to an outing to a museum or baseball game to a field trip to a state or national park. As much as possible, these activities should be integrated with other academic program content, including English language instruction, for a unified curriculum. Include a balance between formal/informal activities and free time for homework and social interaction with other participants. Opportunities for engagement with American students from diverse backgrounds and abilities should be maximized. REQUIRED ADMINISTRATIVE ELEMENTS 1) An overall cost of between $4,000 and $6,000 for the three- to four-week program. Present a budget that is inclusive of tuition and fees, on-campus housing, all meals, health insurance fees (including coverage for evacuation and repatriation benefits), books and educational supplies, ground transportation to and from the closest airport, and other local travel that is part of the program (i.e., cultural outings and college tours). International travel to and from the EducationUSA Academy will be paid by the student. 2) Ability to recruit students to attend EducationUSA Academy at your institution. Articulate a recruitment plan that utilizes the EducationUSA network, as well as your own institution s resources. A strong recruitment plan may include international travel, participation in recruitment fairs, social media campaigns, and other means of advertising the program to potential students. While EducationUSA Academy is a global program, it is permissible for a campus to target their recruitment efforts to a specific world region or group of countries.
4 Note that as each host institution will be ultimately responsible for recruiting a cohort(s) of up to 20 students and that selected institutions are not guaranteed full enrollment. 3) Experience issuing all required visa paperwork for F-1 students. Demonstrate the capacity to issue all required visa paperwork for F-1 students and monitor their compliance with SEVIS/ICE regulations. 4) Project-dedicated staff. Name an experienced academic director who will serve in a full-time management and oversight capacity during the Academy, as well as a coordinator(s) to handle administrative aspects of the Academy. Include resumes for all key staff as an attachment to your proposal. 5) Ability to meet the needs of diverse students. Demonstrate a plan to meet the needs (e.g., dietary, religious, access) of all students, including students with disabilities. OPTIONAL DESIRED ELEMENTS Ability to offer a scholarship for at least one student per cohort to expand the reach of the Academy to deserving students who lack financial means. Simultaneous on-campus programming for U.S. youth that allows for cross-program engagement, including peer language partners. Friendship families or brief homestays. A detailed host family recruitment, screening, and selection process is required for homestay families. Opportunities for one-on-one college advising sessions and/or a college fair.
