1 HOW TO APPLY FOR A SOUTH OGDEN CITY COMMERCIAL BUSINESS LICENSE Thank you for choosing South Ogden City as a place to locate your business. South Ogden is a great place to start and operate a business and we wish you well as you pursue your desires toward a successful and prosperous endeavor. The Business License Department will assist you with the business license application process and has designed this set of guidelines to help you understand some of the requirements for acquiring and maintaining a business license in South Ogden City. Our office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday except on legal holidays. South Ogden City requires licensing of all businesses which engage in any activity carried on for the purpose or gain of economic profit. Engaging in business includes, but is not limited to, the sale of tangible personal property at retail or wholesale, the manufacturing of goods or property and the rendering of personal services for others for a consideration by persons engaged in any profession, trade, craft, business, occupation or other calling, except the rendering of personal services by an employee to his employer under any contract of personal employment. Licenses are required of all occupations based from locations within South Ogden City limits or which carry on business in our city. In order to facilitate the opening of your business, South Ogden City offers the following information to assist you. These are the steps to follow in order to obtain a business license: 1. Register the name of your business with the State of Utah Department of Commerce. You can register on-line at You can also obtain a sales tax number and Employer Identification Number (EIN) at this website. All individuals and partnerships conducting business under an assumed name (DBA: Doing Business As ) must register their name(s) before applying for a business license. This is Utah State Law. Please include a copy of your registration with your application and your sales tax certificate if you are conducting a retail business. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ENTER SOUTH OGDEN AND NOT OGDEN CITY ON YOUR TAX APPLICATION. 2. The South Ogden Public Safety Department requires each commercial business to complete their form no exceptions. This form must be submitted at the time of your business license application and will need to be updated yearly. 3. If you will have an alarm on premises fill out the Alarm Permit application. The fee is $50.00 and is a one-time fee. Please call the police department at if you are unsure if you need an alarm permit. 4. Fill out and submit the Weber County Assessor new business information sheet with your application. We will forward this to the county for you. 5. Fill out completely and submit to the city the business license application 6. Pay the appropriate fee(s) due to the city. (See fee schedule on the following page.) 7. Your business license will be valid when all of the above steps have been completed, the signatures of the mayor and city recorder are on the actual license, and you have received your license personally. All licenses are mailed unless other arrangements have been made. We appreciate your desire to do business in South Ogden City. 2 GENERAL LICENSE INFORMATION Your license is valid for 12 months from the first day of the month you make application (unless it is a temporary, sidewalk vendor or solicitors license). A form and request for payment along with a public safety emergency information sheet will be sent every year when it is time for you to renew. If you close or move your business before it is up for renewal, please call and let us know. Below is the fee schedule for business licenses. If you are unsure, please ask. Solicitors - You do not need to have a city business license to solicit in South Ogden City. However, you do need to have a solicitor s license. You can pick up the form for a solicitor s license from our office or download it from Sidewalk Vendors - There is a separate application for a vendor business license. It is available from the city offices or online at Beer Licenses - If your business includes beer or other alcohol sales, you must request and complete a separate beer license application prior to issuance of your business license. All beer and alcohol applications require the approval of the chief of police. Your beer license fee is separate from your business license fee. 8 SIGN INFORMATION To All Business Owners in South Ogden City: Please note that it is your responsibility to abide by the South Ogden City sign ordinance. Please contact Jeff Barfuss, South Ogden City Building Official, at , for more information on signage for your business. You can review the complete sign ordinance at Click the city code link on the left side of the screen. When you reach the city code page, go to Title 10, Chapter 21. For your convenience, we have included the following fabric (banner) sign portion of the sign ordinance. In zones C-1, C-2, C-3, CP-2 and R-5 each building is allowed to have one banner sign installed on its façade. This banner may be 24 square feet or smaller and can remain up year round. In addition, a second banner may be displayed anywhere on your property two times annually for up to 30 days each time. This banner can be any size and will require a no-cost permit from the city. Inflatable s and balloons are allowed in zones C-1, C-2, C-3, CP-2 and R-5. They may be any size and anywhere on your property, two times annually for up to 30 days each time. They will also require a no-cost permit from the city. In addition, each property may have up to two (2) six (6) square foot specialty signs (a-frames, yard signs, etc.). These signs may be located anywhere on your property. Temporary businesses (Taco stands, Christmas tree lots, etc.) may now have a banner sign in addition to the permanent sign on their cart or stand. This banner sign may be anywhere on the property and a maximum of 24 square feet. All signs shall be securely fastened and maintained so as to be in a clean, safe and attractive condition. Please be aware that a non-compliance fee schedule was also added to the new fabric sign ordinance. The first time you are found in non-compliance with the ordinance, a warning will be issued. A second violation will be assessed a $250 fee. If a third violation takes place, you may have your business license revoked.
