3 THE CITY WITH THE HAPPY SUN Karlstad is the largest city in the county of Värmland. Naturally this means that the city is also the centre for shopping, entertainment and major events. Visitors soon discover that the inhabitants of Karlstad are open and hospitable. As our visitor, we want you to feel really welcome. The city offers beautiful natural scenery dominated by water the river Klarälven whose many channels flow through the city centre, and Lake Vänern with its uninterrupted horizon. Karlstad is also the gateway to the rest of Värmland, and a starting point for whatever 21 you want to do. Within a radius of 30 minutes by car you will find culture, nature, exciting activities and peaceful places. In most summers, we are well up the league table of sunshine hours but our sun does in fact have a historical background a story we love to tell. Eva Lisa Holtz was a waitress in the city in the latter part of the 18th century. She was much appreciated for her happy nature, and became known as Sola i Karlstad (Sunny in Karlstad). You can meet her yourself her statue is on the riverside outside the Stadshotell. Expect entertainment, events and sport During the summer months the streets and squares of Karlstad are packed with pavement cafes and echo to the sound of laughter. We are actually one of the top ranked towns in the whole of Sweden when it comes to al fresco eating. The bustling waterfront area of Inre Hamn, below the aromatic Kaffeskrapan building, boasts a marina, several restaurants and a large pier. From Sandgrundsudden Cape, an old island that now juts into the Klarälven River, the sounds of concerts by the likes of Diggiloo and the Benny Andersson Orchestra drift over Karlstad in summer. Other places to keep an eye on when it comes to music concerts is the Café August with its verdant gardens, Nöjesfabriken, Tempel and the Löfbergs Lila Arena that hosts the Håkan Hellström spring tour. The Löfbergs Lila Arena is also the home venue for the local ice hockey team, Färjestad BK, in the winter months. Karlstad is a sports mad city that hosts various national and international championships each year. Perhaps the most famous of which is Rally Sweden, an annual event on the car rally world championship circuit that attracts rally fans from all over the world to Karlstad and Värmland. Best shopping tour Karlstad is a great place for shopping. In the city centre there are several shopping arcades with all the best-known boutique chains. Along with charming little shops and cafes, they make the city centre perfect for a day s shopping. Stroll from place to place and see what is on offer. A few kilometres to the west of the centre there is the continually growing Bergvik shopping centre and an Ikea store. The ideal place if you want to fill your car before returning home. Take the opportunity to go bargain-hunting for those unusual retro odds and ends, or period clothes that you can only find in second-hand markets. But don t hang about. Collectors, visitors and the Karlstad natives have already discovered that Karlstad is a real metropolis for second-hand items. In the charity shops and the flea market things are often really cheap, while in the antique shops you may find that curiosity you have long searched for. Karlstad and the neighbouring municipalities of Hammarö, Grums, Kil and Forshaga have a total population of just over 130,000. Distances to Karlstad: 308 km from Stockholm, 248 km from Gothenburg, 230 km from Oslo in Norway. Sandgrundsparken won the 2010 Siena Prize, one of the most prestigious architectural awards for outdoor environments in Sweden. 4 5

4 THE RIVER KLARÄLVEN, THE LAKES AND OUR OWN INLAND SEA Water has a very benign effect on us human beings. The waterside is where the original ironworks grew up. Today, various watercourses leave their mark on daily life and the leisuretime activities on offer. Karlstad is built on the delta of the river Klarälven, which has eight branches flowing out into Lake Vänern the largest inland sea in Sweden and the third largest in Europe. To the west, the elongated Lake Värmeln gave 21 its name to the whole province. The land around Lake Värmeln became Värmland. Lake Vänern has more than 22,000 islands. Many of them are in the archipelago just outside Karlstad, Hammarö and Grums. This is where boating comes into its own. You will have no trouble finding a rock or beach to yourself where you can moor. Vänern is a freshwater lake. The water is clean and great for bathing. Everyone wants to catch the boat bus When summer arrives, the Karlstad public transport network is augmented by water buses. Experience Karlstad city centre from the water. You can hop on and off a water bus as you wish or even take the full water tour and experience Karlstad from the Klarälven River and its beautiful stretches of water plus the delightful small lock. There are seven water bus routes with 16 stops and tickets cost exactly the same as on normal buses. The water bus service also offers unforgettable trips through the archipelago to the islands of Västra Långholmen and Jäverön where you can alight for a swim or a stroll around. You can also take a trip to Skoghall on the island of Hammarö, a delightful journey that passes through the beautiful nature of Skoghallsådran. You can also take the water bus to the culture centre at Hammarö Church in Lövnäs. The water buses run from June to August. taste of the lake Meet the Vänern archipelago in Lillängshamnen on Hammarö. Here you will find a fish smokery with its own store that sells locally caught fish from Lake Vänern such as salmon, lavaret and perch. In Värmskog outside Grums you will find Café Liljenäs on Lake Värmeln. The Cafe s delicate prawn open sandwiches and al fresco music evenings are a popular attraction. Good luck with fishing If you love fly-fishing or spinning for salmon and brown trout, the Forshaga rapids are the obvious place to go. At the angling centre, you can buy a fishing permit and read up-to-date catch reports. It is a place where you can also meet other anglers, take a break in the wind shelter and prepare your food over an open fire. The salmon here are unique worldwide. When the land started to rise again after the last ice age, this species of salmon was cut off. Ever since then, the fish have used Klarälven as their spawning grounds instead of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. For that reason, they are called Landlocked Atlantic Salmon. HISTORIC BOAT TRIP WITH FREJA Freja av Fryken is the steamship that sank in 1896 and remained at the bottom of Lake Fryken for a century before being salvaged and renovated. Her home port is Fryksta in Kil and Freja offers guided tours and evening cruises through beautiful historic landscapes. Lots of bathing places Keen bathers can take a swim in the third largest lake in Europe and the longest river in Sweden. Not many can. It is no surprise there are loads of bathing points, bays, cliffs and sandy beaches to choose from here. The river Klarälven is one of the longest in Europe, stretching over 460 km from Härjedalen, through Norway and down through Värmland before reaching Karlstad. The surface of Lake Vänern is 44 meters above sea level. You can travel between Sweden s east coast and west coast along the river Göta, across Lake Vänern and the Göta canal. Hammarö is one of the largest islands in Lake Vänern. Not surprising that people have coined the expression The Archipelago municipality. 6 7

5 EXPERIENCE A CULTURAL TOUR Värmland has a rich cultural heritage. Many of Sweden s greatest authors and storytellers come from this part of Sweden. In and around Karlstad are many cultural places recounting our history and offering a varied range of music, singing and theatre. At the southern shore of Lake Fryken, take the opportunity to visit Fryksta Krukmakeri, a pottery whose artists are well-known for their special designs, everyday objects and exhibition pieces. VÄRMLANDS MUSEUM Värmlands Museum is beautifully situated on Sandgrundsudden in the centre of Karlstad. The permanent exhibition on Karlstad Through The Ages is well worth a visit, spanning 9,000 years in the past and into the future. The museum also has a modern art section and an experimental workshop. Värmlands Museum appeals to all age groups and also boasts a museum shop with genuine Värmländ arts and crafts and a café. Temporary exhibitions scheduled for 2011 worth noting include Mönsterkraft (Pattern Power) and Made in Värmland. Mönsterkraft marks the 40th anniversary of the Ten Swedish Designers group and the entire exhibition looks at shapes, colours and patterns in design. Made in Värmland, as the name suggests, is an exhibition of creative entrepreneurship and enterprise in Värmländ ranging from smart packaging to coffee makers, pelargonium and flashy cars. 21 Värmlandsteatern presents a wide range of productions throughout the year. The repertoire features everything from musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar to fun packed family shows. A new tradition that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face - are the light hearted and comical theatre productions in the cosy Mariebergsskogen city park in the summer. Unique opera suite at wermland opera R NGEN R NGDES People come to the Wermland Opera from all over the country. In recent years, productions such as Rigoletto, La Bohème and Sunset Boulevard have played to full houses. The main stage at Wermland Opera is set to reopen in 2011 following a sumptuous restoration. The reopening will be celebrated by a production of the complete Ring Cycle by Wagner. There will be five performances of the complete cycle of four operas in spring and summer The popular Forever Young will return to Lilla scenen (The Small stage) and later in the autumn the musical Crazy for You with music by George Gershwin will be presented on the main stage. DER NIBELUNGEN Gustaf Fröding s beautiful memorial Gustaf Fröding, one of Sweden s most famous national poets, was born at Alsters Herrgård. This beautiful country house overlooking Lake Vänern, is situated eight km east of Karlstad and is now a culture centre. Alsters Herrgård is a memorial to Gustaf Fröding and includes a permanent exhibition of the writer and his works. The country house also has a crafts shed, wonderful park grounds that are perfect for walks, while Alsters Herrgårdscafé serves delicious lunches and coffee and biscuits. The exhibition this year includes works by Kosta Boda glass artist Kjell Engman and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, increasingly famous for his paintings, Ernst Billgren and works by Lisa Rinnevuo and Karolina Nolin. You can also buy works of art and interior design pieces in the shop or relax in the café or wine bar. Sweet music in the summer Forshaga s chamber music days offer an out of the ordinary musical experience. Artistic directors Anders Lagerqvist and Per Öman both have their roots in the area. For the chamber music days in July they will bring along celebrity guests and world-famous ensembles. Together, they will put on top-class classical music. Unique clothing design Fantasy and creativity with the focus on colour and cut is the signature of Mimmi Design, which has a studio and a country store in Pikenberg near Grums. Mimmi is renowned for beautiful linen garments for down to earth women. The store also stocks leatherwear, handbags and cushions. The Eiffel Tower in Paris was largely built with iron ore from Borgvik. Halla in Forshaga is home to the only genuine Father Christmas in Värmland, Inge Olson. There, it is Christmas all year round. Hammarö is the third largest island on Lake Vänern and is about the same size as Manhattan. 8 9

6 It does not matter what time of year you visit us. At any time, there are lots of activities both out of doors in our scenic natural environment, as well as indoors with facilities for your enjoyment and exercise. The most characteristic features of the Karlstad region are water, primeval forests and open agricultural land. Just to the west of Karlstad lies Skutberget, our popular sports and exercise centre with hiking trails, illuminated ski tracks, barbecues, mini golf and frisbee golf. LOTS OF ACTIVITIES Mariebergsskogen (Marieberg forest) Fun and excitement for all the senses and for the whole family. Come and see the farm animals at Lillskogen, explore the unique Lekträdgården (Play Garden), and feel the wingbeats of history in the historic buildings. During the summer the open-air theatre offers community singing, exhibitions and concerts. You can restore your energy and relax awhile in the café at Naturum or in Terrassens Glasseria. Mariebergsskogen is a well-known Karlstad tradition that gets better every year. It is easy to get there from the city centre. Go by bicycle, on foot, boat bus or by bus. If by car, there is a large free car park. In winter, you can go ice skating on the child-friendly ice rink in the middle of the park. If you want to go cross country skiing, you can take a tour out at Mariebergsviken. 21 Spend a couple of days here. There is more hiking at Fryksta just outside Kil, Kilenegården at Hammarö, at the SISU sports centre in Forshaga or at Silverleden in Grums. We have a wide range of attractive hiking paths and tracks, ranging from one to many miles. Nature s an amazing many-faceted character. There is so much to tell what is happening in the Karlstad region. Come and explore yourself! Complete entertainment Come along to a fun-filled factory. Leklandet (the Play Country) has 1,600 sqm where children and young people can romp and run around as much as they want. An inspiring, fun and exciting indoor playground. The fun factory also has 16 ultramodern bowling alleys offering the very best both for top-class players as well as for people who just want to spend a few hours enjoying themselves with friends. After your activities, it is time for a bite of food in the restaurant or a refreshing drink in the bar. There is room for parties of all sizes big and small. Floating Museum with experimental workshop Floating timber down the Klarälven River ceased in It was the end of a tradition dating from the Middle Ages. But the memories live on. Dyvelsten Flottningsmuseum in Forshaga pays homage to the memories and traditions of those days. One of the warehouses has been converted into an experience centre focused on water and humans. Children of all ages are invited to discover, experiment and play here. You can learn and discover more about the mystical world of the river and the history of timber floating. A 90 km adventure on wheels Klarälvsbanan (the river Klarälven track) is a former railway embankment which has been covered over with tarmac. Hop on a bike in Karlstad and cycle northwards via Forshaga and Deje all the way to Uddeholm west of Hagfors. A 90 km journey. No vehicles, just genuine, beautiful and inspiring natural scenery in every direction. Safe and secure. You can also steer southwards through the beautiful Vänern landscape to Mörudden on Hammarö, which is well signposted from Klarälvsbanan. On the quayside at Mörudden you can enjoy good food and breathtaking views over Lake Vänern. Or put on your roller-skates and set off on the longest trip ever. Definitely a challenge but a memory to treasure. Archipelago Museum on Hammarö Beautifully framed equestrian sports There are 38 different kinds of fish in Lake Vänern. The most common of which are smelt and vendace. Prince Carl Philip of Sweden is also the Duke of Värmland. Did you know that the coast road round Lake Vänern is the same distance as from Stockholm to Paris? The cultural heritage centre at Hammarö Church also houses Skärgårdsmuseet (Archepelago Museum) with its unique collection of old lake fishing objects. The nearby Hammars udde is a popular destination for outings and walks. Visit the lakeside riding centre, one of the largest and most beautiful in Sweden. The Equality Line Horse Show in Hästviken on Hammarö is an annual event. It is one of the biggest horse jumping competitions in Scandinavia and attracts star riders from all round the Nordic region

7 FEELING GOOD, BETTER AND BEST From time to time, it does us good to get out of the daily round and set off for new places that offer peace and quiet, interesting meetings, relaxation and the chance of doing things at our own pace. Some of us find such places in places of natural beauty. There are many such places in and around Karlstad near the waters of Lake Vänern, by the river Klarälven, beside some small lake, or deep in the forest. For example, go to the southern tip of Hammarö and settle Historic country houses Dömle Herrgård offers guests a relaxing atmosphere in a rural manor house setting. There are plenty of activities available here to provide you with creativity and inspiration. Why not try kayaking, archery or flyfishing? Carl-Elis källare, with its interior design of ancient parkland oak and reclaimed tiles from Deje pulp mill boasts the finest wine cellar in Värmland. And best of all - it is just a 9 iron shot to the first tee at Dömle Golf & Country Club. Apertin near Kil dates back as far as the 12th century, when monks from Aberdeen settled here. Hence the name Apertin. These days there are facilities for staying and eating at Apertin. The house has been carefully renovated over the years, and its history is still alive in its walls. All the bedrooms are individually furnished, and have retained their nooks and crannies. The restaurant menu takes inspiration from Swedish and international dishes. The paths through the park meander in the English style, and were completed at the same time as the manor house itself. This beautiful area is guaranteed to help you wind down and relax. down on the cliffs by the Skagen lighthouse. Relax, and direct your gaze at the horizon. Or stay in Karlstad and enjoy this compact city s excellent restaurants and cosy cafés. Here are places where it is easy to get together with friends. Here s a tip go for a walk to Sandgrundsparken next to the museum park. Enjoy the profusion of flowers. Take it easy on a bench or on the large wooden jetty by the river. The park is laid out so as to be accessible for everyone. DISCOVER A NEW GOLF COURSE EVERY DAY Golf courses here in the southern part of Värmland all offer a beautiful natural setting. Several hotels offer package deals with both accommodation and golf on various golf courses. You can also plan your own golf trip to the Karlstad region stay a whole week or just come for a nice long weekend. None of the golf courses in the region is more than about 30 minutes by car from the city centre of Karlstad. A couple of them are almost in the city centre. If you want to enjoy country life to the full, then you might prefer to stay near one of the courses. There is something to meet every wish choose between camping, a cottage, a youth hostel or a country house. The proximity of Lake Vänern means that several of the region s golf courses can offer a longer golf season and would normally be the case at our northern latitudes. The coastal climate melts the snow in the spring, and keeps the snow away for a few weeks longer in the autumn. A place for people seeking inner development One of Europe s leading centre s for Human Growth and a special meeting place for people interested in all aspects of health and well-being Ängsbacka is famed for its annual program promoting every aspect of vibrant life. Every year thousands of people from all walks of life attend seasonal festivals and residential courses at Ängsbacka on its beautiful 6 hectare site in Molkom surrounded by the woods and lakes of the Värmland countryside - only 20 minutes from Karlstad. The very first railway in Sweden ran from Fryken to the Klarälven River. It opened in L M Ericsson, founder of the eponymous Swedish telephone company, was born in Värmskog in Grums. When the S/S Freja was raised after lying at the bottom of the lake for nearly 100 years, champagne and cognac found on board still tasted excellent. Seven nearby golf courses Billeruds Golfklubb Scenic location on a promontory in Ekholmssjön (Lake Ekholm), in a bay off Lake Vänern. Gently undulating links through parkland and forest, making the best of the natural environment. 18 holes. Bryngfjorden The main course is an 18-hole course in undulating terrain, in a varied forest and parkland setting. There is also the East course, a short course with 9 holes. Dömle Golf & Country Club Attractive environment close to Dömle Herrgård (Dömle Manor). Course in a forest and parkland setting, with quite a few water hazards, not to mention Dömleån (the Dömle stream) that winds its way along the entire golf course. 18 holes. Hammarö Golfklubb Varied, gently undulating forest and parkland links, set in a beautiful Värmland pine forest. A few plateau greens can provide interesting situations. 18 holes. Karlstad Golfklubb Classic forest and parkland links in a beautiful natural setting. 27 holes divided into three loops each with 9 holes. Kils Golfklubb Beautiful location on the south-east beach of Lake Fryken. 18 holes. Sommarro Golf Two high-quality 9-hole courses in a central location. The courses are on the sandy delta by the river Klarälven. One of the courses is open all year round pay and play
