3 Manitoba Work Obtaining your Work Permit Citizenship and Immigration Canada - Application to work in Canada: Obtaining a Licence in Manitoba If you are applying for your first driver s licence, or are moving to Manitoba, your Autopac agent will be happy to help you. If you have held a driver s licence in another country, we require specific information so we can determine the Class and Stage of licence you should hold in Manitoba. If You Are New to Manitoba: Ins/Insurance/Moving/pages/arriving_in_manitoba.aspx Foreign Driver s Licence Information Requirements: Manitoba Public Insurance: Costs* Knowledge Test $10 Class 1 licence Road Test $50 Class 2 or 3 licence Road Test $45 Class 4 licence Road Test $35 Class 5 licence $30 Class 6 licence $30 Air Brake: $30** *Costs are subject to change ** There is no additional charge for the air brake test if you are taking a road test for a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence and the vehicle you are using for the test is equipped with air brakes General Testing Information Please check-in 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time There is a 30-minute time limit to complete a knowledge test The knowledge test is not an open book test Manitoba - 3
4 Cellular phones and electronic devices are not allowed in the test area Only one knowledge or road test of the same class may be completed per day There is a 14-day waiting period between the knowledge and road test for class 1, 2 and 3 licences Obtaining a Travel Visa /I-94 Card International Visitors to the United States: Obtaining a SIN Card Government of Canada Social Insurance Number: Canada Immigration Information: Personal Protective Equipment Footwear (shoes or boots) must meet Canadian Standards Association Standard of Grade 1 Toe Protection and Puncture Resistant Steel Plate and Certified Electric Shock Resistant Soles. This footwear will possess the Canadian Standards Association identification (pictured on the right). Eye Protection (safety glasses with side shields, safety goggles or face shields) must meet Canadian Standards Association Standard of Z High Visibility Safety Vest (must have reflective strips) Work gloves Hard Hat Basic Tool Kit Hammer Long handled pry bar (60 cm) Combination wrenches (5/16, 7/16, 9/16 ) Small bolt cutters Pliers Manitoba - 4

8 Alberta Work Obtaining your Work Permit Citizenship and Immigration Canada Application to work in Canada: Obtaining a Class 5 Licence in Alberta Government of Alberta Applying for an Alberta Driver s Licence: Obtaining a Class 1 Licence in Alberta Calgary Calgary Registry Locations: You will visit a registry to write a Class 7 Driver s Permit Test. The fee for the test is $17.60 each time you write the test. Once you pass the written test you will receive a Class 7 Learner s Permit. The fee for the licence itself depends on the number of years it is issued for and it is issued based on your work permit. A 5 year licence costs $ As your work permit is for less than 5 years, the fee will be less. You will need to give them your licence from your home country and apply to the government for permission to do an advanced driver road test. It is very important that you apply for the advanced road test as the other is for the graduated licence which will not allow you to do your Class 1 work. This process may take a week or two to get approved. During this time, you should be booking your airbrake course and driver s medical (see below). The fee to upgrade your licence from class 7 to class 5 is $22.45 to change and $ to do the road test. Once you have your class 5 road test and airbrakes course, you will need to return to the registries office to take your class 1 written test. The fee for the class 1 written test is $ o At this time you will also need to get a driver s abstract from the registries. Upon completing your class 1 written test, we will schedule your pre-hire road test, drug test, dangerous goods test and orientation. This is when your employment with Bison Transport will commence. Alberta - 8
9 o We will schedule a Class 1 road test with the province for approximately 4 weeks after starting orientation. You will however need to go to the registries and pay for the road test permit. This permit is $173. The Airbrake Course is completed through a Driving School. There are a couple of different class 1 driving schools in Calgary, but CCA Truck Driving School is the preferred school as it has a thorough program and offers the course 3 times a week. It is $225 and is available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and runs from 7:00 to 17:00. It is up to you to schedule this course. Their phone number is and they are located at A Street SE. o CCA Truck Driving School: To obtain your class 1 medical you can go to any medical center. There is one located near Barlow Trail and Glenmore Trail. It is called Oasis Medical Center. The address is Street SE. The price for this at this location is $160. Edmonton Edmonton Registry Locations: You will visit a Registry to write a class 7 Driver s permit test. The fee for the test is $17.60 each time you write the test. The price for this varies depending on where you get it done but will average around $120.
