1 1 Exceptional Opportunity in Southeastern Minnesota President and Chief Executive Officer United Way of Olmsted County Rochester, Minnesota The United Way of Olmsted County (UWOC) is actively seeking a proven visionary and energetic leader as its next President and CEO. UWOC has been recognized nationally for creating innovative collaborations and partnerships in its impact areas of education, income, health and basic community needs. Through a combination of a strong, growing local economy and a legacy of committed and involved volunteers and organizations working together, the new CEO will have the opportunity to strengthen and lead United Way in advancing a shared vision for new, yet uncharted initiatives for collective impact on complex social challenges all working toward the common good. The Rochester and Olmsted County community will be one of the fastest growing communities in the United States over the next twenty years projected to double in size. Leading that growth is Mayo Clinic, the world renowned center of patient care, research and education located in Rochester. Originally a vision of Mayo Clinic, Destination Medical Center (DMC) is a $6 billion economic development initiative to secure Minnesota s status as a global medical destination center now and in the future. Mayo will be investing $3.5 billion in its Rochester campus and expects to spur an additional $2 billion in private investment as well. The State of Minnesota, Olmsted County and the City of Rochester are deeply engaged in helping fund and plan for DMC. The initiative will take place over a 20 year period and is projected to create 35,000 to 40,000 new jobs in Rochester and Minnesota over that period. The Rochester/Olmsted County Community Mayo Clinic forms the core of Rochester s economy. It currently employs over 35,000 people in the city and every year draws over 2 million visitors to the city. The clinic s many facilities, along with hotels, restaurants and retail stores, comprise nearly the entire city s downtown. Excluding state government, the Mayo Clinic is the largest employer in Minnesota.

2 IBM s Rochester campus is one of the company s most important research and manufacturing centers. It has produced the System i series and other cutting edge technology for IBM. Think Mutual Bank, a regional bank in the Rochester and Twin Cities metropolitan areas was spawned initially as the IBM Employees Credit Union. The University Center Rochester campus is home to Rochester Community and Technical College, Winona State University Rochester Center, and the University of Minnesota Extension. The three institutions offer more than 150 programs of study and enroll approximately 15,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and workforce education programs on a scenic 518-acre campus. The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is located in the heart of downtown Rochester and offers distinctive health sciences and biosciences education to prepare students for a broad spectrum of current and emerging careers, ranging from patient care to pure and applied research. The campus community serves approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students. Rochester has long been high on the list of Money Magazine s Best Places to Live index. It is continually called out on Best lists by Kiplinger s, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, Outdoor Life, Money Magazine, CNNMoney.com, and many others. As noted earlier, these population figures may double in the next twenty years. Introduction to United Way of Olmsted County UWOC is characterized as the community s leadership organization in creating collaborations and partnerships to address the human service needs of Olmsted County. United Way of Olmsted County has a very engaged twenty-four member Board of Directors composed of top community leaders. United Way s move to a community impact model has spawned powerful collaborations and partnerships with partner non-profits and public organizations all across the area. It has earned a 96 point rating on United Way Worldwide s business performance index. It is one of the most effectively run United Way organizations in the United States.

3 3 The 2013 LIVE UNITED campaign raised $4.2 million in contributions and other revenue to support 48 programs across dozens of agencies and partnerships. UWOC is working to make a difference in preparing children and youth to succeed in school and in the community; to move working families toward financial stability; to improve health in the community; and to meet basic needs of food, shelter, safety and inclusivity. United Way of Olmsted County Organizational Strengths and Recent Achievements Identified by Community Stakeholders The transition from a traditional pass-through organization to one that has identified goals and measurements for improving the lives of people in our community has been an overarching success. United Way s continuing campaign success is a real achievement, particularly given the challenges in the economy. The United Way has successfully developed very positive partnering relationships with community agencies that have elevated the work of all. The initiatives United Way has fostered like the Community Information Sharing System, the Community Gang Initiative, the Imagination Library, Running Start and the Winter Outerwear Initiative have placed UWOC squarely in the center of community leadership. The level and quality of board governance and leadership continues to enhance community trust and support for United Way. The courage and bravery to be innovative in the way in which needs are addressed and outcomes are evaluated with data and evidence that measure and support the outcomes. The United Way brand that says trust, integrity, collaboration and leadership.

4 The Greatest Challenges Facing the Organization and the New CEO Short to Mid-Term (6 months to two years) The new CEO will need to quickly become involved and engaged in the community, listening first and acting second. The organization will need to begin to develop and implement strategies to attract high net worth donors to United Way in a more substantive way. To continue to build the endowment fund. To use the transition time to reaffirm partner and non-partner agency relationships and to reach out to key constituencies such as the faith community to support and enhance collaboration. To explore ways in which service and revenues can expand outside the immediate Rochester area to better serve residents needs. To continue to develop and implement United Way s approach to addressing the opportunities and impacts of Destination Medical Center as well as address the expected changes in the economic and social structure of the community. To evaluate the results of the current strategic plan and continue to move the plan ahead while continuing the planning for 2015 to Long Term To execute strategic plans and keep the train on the track as collaborations and initiatives become more numerous and complex. To reinvent the United Way if necessary. The Position The President and Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Directors who guides the mission, strategic direction and policies of the United Way using the Carver governance model. The President and CEO has wide latitude in exercising independent initiative and judgment, subject to the policies and procedures established by the Board of Directors and is fully responsible for a committed staff of twelve.

5 Leadership Philosophy Required 5 The President and CEO provides strong leadership, shares vision, inspires staff and Board members to do their best work, builds strong relationships with all stakeholders, and creates, as well as identifies, strategic and collaborative opportunities for the organization. Compensation & Benefits The salary range for the position is competitive for like-type and like-size United Way organizations, based on experience. A comprehensive employee benefits plan is also included. Education and Experience BA plus advanced studies in fields relevant to United Way are required.
