3 Services that can offer help The OASIS Partnership For adults who are worried about their drinking and want to do something about it. Tel: (Aylesbury) Tel: (Wycombe) & support Services Provided 1-to-1 counselling Information & advice Brief interventions Drop-ins Onward referrals for detox & residential rehabilitation Specialist Community Addictions Service (SCAS) For adults who believe they may need medical help and support regarding their alcohol consumption. Tel: (Aylesbury) Tel: (Wycombe) Binge drinking is defined as drinking twice the recommended limit. The NHS recommends that you drink no more than: 3-4 units (Men) 2-3 units (Women) per day You cannot save up all your units and use them in one go. Alcohol can reduce the body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals, which can be essential for converting food to energy. This slows down reaction times and reduces endurance. Referrals to this service can be made by a GP or The OASIS Partnership. 10 3

4 Sex, Drugs and Alcohol... Recovery Position Alcohol and drugs often cause you to lose your inhibitions making unsafe sexual encounters more likely when you are under the influence. First-time sex is often under the influence of alcohol and associated with a lack of control. Mixing drugs and alcohol with sex increases the risk of sexual assault or other violence. Sex under the influence of drugs/alcohol is more likely to take place without the use of condoms, therefore increasing the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or unwanted pregnancy. A side effect of excessive alcohol consumption is hypothermia so it is vital that you keep the person warm. 4 9

5 IN CASE OF EMERGENCY DON T PANIC!! The Emergency Services are there to help you. To calculate the number of units in your drink, you will need to know: The volume of the drink (in millilitres). Units The Maths!! 1. Check there are no hazards (broken glass etc.) around the person, if there are remove them. 2. If the person is unconscious, ensure that their airway is clear. 3. Check that the person is breathing by looking, listening and feeling for movement of their chest and abdomen. 4. Once you have confirmed they are breathing roll them into the recovery position. 5. Call Get someone to stand in an obvious place so the ambulance crew will see them. 7. Keep the person warm. 8. While waiting for the ambulance, repeat steps 2 & 3. The alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage this is on the bottle or can. Then all you need to do is follow the steps below. 1. Multiply the volume of the drink by the ABV percentage 2. Divide by 1000 Example So for a pint (568ml) of standard Carlsberg lager (3.8% ABV): x 3.8 = = (about 2.2 units per pint) 8 5

6 What s your favourite drink? Here are the unit values of some common drinks available in pubs and clubs. Eat before you drink. Don t leave drinks unattended. Have a safe night out Alternate alcohol drinks with soft drinks or water. Plan how you are getting home before going out. Never enter a private hire vehicle you have not booked. It is not insured to carry you and may not have a licence. REMEMBER: It is illegal to sell alcohol to someone who is drunk or to buy alcohol on behalf of someone who is drunk. 6 7
